Installation

The EVCC evSmartPlug can be configured to work in several environments inside or outside. For example, the unit can be installed on an outdoor 5 x 5 vinyl post, an outside wall, inside a parking garage, and other convenient EV charging locations.

When using electric products, basic precautions should always be taken. The installation must be installed by a qualified electrician and in accordance with all local electrical codes and ordinances.

Installation should be performed by a qualified licensed electrician.

With the proper tools in hand, the installation process will take between 45 to 60 minutes. Be sure to read through the entirety of this installation documentation prior to continuing. Doing so will ensure proper preparedness.

NOTE: The assembly portion of the instructions in the following sections are only necessary if you've purchased the EVCC Dual Universal kit option of the EVCC. Otherwise, much of the assembly will have been completed at the factory.

What's Included

The EVCC evSmartPlug currently comes in 3 configurations:

  • Dual Universal 40amp (suited for custom installations and unmanaged chargers)
  • Dual Indoor 40amp NEMA 14-50 Outlets (suited for indoor parking)
  • Dual Outdoor 40amp NEMA 14-50 Outlets (suited for outdoor parking)

‍All EVCC evSmartPlug configurations are listed below, however, for the purposes of this documentation, the EVCC will be mounted on an inside wall using the Dual 40amp NEMA 14-50 Outlets configuration.

All EVCC evSmartPlug configurations are obtainable on Amazon.com and other online retail stores.

Dual Universal Included Parts

Obtain the Dual Universal 40amp EVCC evSmartPlug for universal use, for example, to be installed on an outside 5 x 5 post or pedestal. The universal configuration can be used to hardwire unmanaged EV chargers as well such as ClipperCreek or Tesla brand chargers.

1 x EVCC evSmartPlug - Universal Dual. The EVCC device will monitor, control and allow access of up to two 40amp NEMA receptacles such as NEMA 14-50, 6-50 outlets, or an unmanaged (dumb) charger such as a hardwired ClipperCreek or Tesla charger.
2 x 50amp DINrail Mountable Contactor. The contactors are used to switch on and off the power to the receptacles (one contactor for each receptacle). The EVCC controls the position of the contactor (on or off) based on the EV drivers use of the EV Driver app. These contactors are rated for a constant 12kW of output (240v x 50amps).
2 x Current Transformer. The CTs are responsible for measuring the amperage use of each receptacle and will be connected to one leg of the line-in power per receptacle.
1 x 8in Aluminum DINrail Bracket. The DINrail bracket is used to simplify the mounting of the two contactors. The bracket can be permanently mounted to the desired surface while the contactors can be mounted and dismount for easy installation and maintenance.
1 x 6 Pole DINrail Mount Ground Busbar. The ground busbar is use to tie all ground wires together and can be conveniently mounted on the DINrail for easy installation.
1 x CAT6 Shielded Ethernet Coupler. The Ethernet Coupler will join the CAT6 Ethernet cable of the EVCC with the incoming Ethernet cable responsible for the Internet connection. It will not be needed if WiFi is used for the Internet connection instead.
EVCC Whip Wiring Terminals and Connectors. The EVCC whip wires that extrude from the bottom of the enclosure are 4ft long to support any number of installation configurations. For some installations, all of the wires must be trimmed and the connectors and terminals crimped to the ends. The unit includes 4 female connectors (for the CT wires), 4 x 12-10AWG 8 stud insulated ring terminals (for the power meter terminals), and 6 x 6 stud insulated Y terminals (for the contactor coils (4) and EVCC power wires (2)).
4 x #10 or #12 pan head stainless steel sheet metal mounting screws. These screws will be needed if you intend to mount the EVCC to a concreate or wooden wall using the included mounting bracket.

Dual Indoor or Outdoor Outlet Included Parts

Obtain the Indoor, Dual 40amp NEMA 14-50 Receptacle Kit EVCC evSmartPlug for indoor use, for example, to be installed on a parking garage concrete wall.

Indoor, Dual 40amp NEMA 14-50 Receptacle Kit

Obtain the Outdoor, Dual 40amp NEMA 14-50 Receptacle Kit EVCC evSmartPlug for outdoor use, for example, to be installed on an exterior wall.

Outdoor, Dual 40amp NEMA 14-50 Receptacle Kit
